Pantomimr Reference_Francis

Hello again, class. I made some changes on my reference. I am looking forward to hearing from you guys, which one do you like the most. Thank you for your time, have a good Sunday.

Pass: 4animc

01.
A guy is waiting for a glassware that he bought online and agreed to let the drone deliver the shipment. When the day came, in the afternoon, while he was reading a book and drinking coffee on the patio outside his house, the drone came. It dropped the package so hard and destroyed it. He was surprised and speechless, watching the drone fly away.

02.
John just bought a trash can (The red price tag, still attached) for his home office. After that, He

stopped at the bus stop to wait for his ride home. Tragically the rain started to fall around afternoon. He is a kind of person who is not afraid of water, but he does not like to get his head wet. To protect himself he used the can to cover it and continue waiting for the bus to come.

03.
Similar to the previous story, John just bought a trash can (The red price tag, still attached) for his home office. But instead, he's looking for a cab to go home. Then the rain started to fall, and to protect his head from getting wet he used the can.

04
Another variation of number two. This time, the scene started when he sat on the trashcan (the one he just bought), but he ended up running away to avoid the rain.

05
She's a dog owner. She just found out her dog has died. She hugged him, for the last time to say goodbye. She loves the dog very much.

06
Charlie was going to work in the morning, then suddenly it started to rain. Luckily, he brought his umbrella. He pushed it harder because It got stuck. When it opened, the wind blows the top of the umbrella away leaving him alone holding on the stick, and He was speechless.

07.
Ryan just got his IKEA stuff delivered to his house. He's waiting for a newborn baby. While he got excited building the crib, he failed miserably. In the end, he got tired then taped the crib together. (Which I will use more tape around the crib ).

  1. Hey Francis, nice variety of takes!

    I like number 2, 4, 6 and 7

For 2 there was a nice clear thought process at the end before he uses that to cover himself. For 4 it was nice too, but I feel like he doesn't need to touch his face, looking at his arm is probably enough to sell that it had started raining. For 6 it's pretty funny, if that's the one you choose I would maybe have the umbrella open more before it blows away. And 7 is still funny to me even after seeing it class already.

    Cool stuff!

  2. Hi Francis, thanks for posting these. I'd like to hear your explanation of what is going on in some of these - for example, what is the trash can with the price tag on it? I'm still looking for a little more "character" in these. What is at stake? How are this guy's reactions unique/specific?

    1. Hi Victor, thank you for the response. These are the clip descriptions:

  3. Hi Francis, thanks for the explanations. Here are my thoughts:
1 - This is a funny idea, but there's not much opportunity for animation here. Seems like the less the guy does, the funnier it is, so the shot becomes more about the gag of the drone than about pantomime acting.
2 - What does this situation tell us about his character? What is at stake? He has nothing to lose by getting his trash can wet. Are other people watching? Is his pride at stake? Where is the conflict?
    3 - Same questions
    4 - Same questions
5 - This seems to be one idea. There is opportunity for subtle acting in here, but I would like to see some clearer beats and changes in the scene. It would be more powerful to show the moment of discovery and realization, and play through the thought process of her figuring out what has happened.
6 - I don't see the acting you describe in the video clip, but it could be developed into a good scene.
7 - I like this progression, though doing this sort of time lapse will be more like a series of poses and less about a pantomime thought process. Would be a cool scene, though.

I posted some pantomime clips to (hopefully) further inspire for the kind of character moments I'm looking for.

  4. Thank you for this insight. I will try to work on some better references. After reading your comments, I have come to a realization that my references did not explain enough the character, and there's no conflict or struggle on its own.

I will bring some updates on Wednesday.
