Pantomime Ref

Hey everyone, hope you are having a great weekend, here is my pantomime reference, i have three versions and they are mostly different just in the beginning pose, I just want to see how clear my idea is before jumping into animation

Please watch the reference first before reading the description below, that way we can know if the idea is clear enough by itself or if it needs something else.

Video

http://www.syncsketch.com/playground/6583355edbe94c9d83bde7a8d9138df7

Forced retirement

Dave is a CEO and CO-Founder of his company but he has gotten to the age where the board members want him to retire (or maybe they fired him)

He starts concerned about what he is gonna do now, he is not 30 anymore and no one will hire him or he is too old to start over.
He turns from the window to finish cleaning his desk

There are only two items remaining for him to take (could be more but for time issues let's just say is just these two)

His name plate ( which he puts back in the table or can throw it carelessly in the box) he doesn't care about this anymore he is upset that they are letting him go

the last thing is a family picture which he hasn't really stop to appreciate in a long time, this makes him smile, gives him hope for the future and he puts the picture carefully in the box and then he walks away with the box

Let me know what you think, I want to have some clear gear change and a little endowment there with the two items, it seems a lot and looks like i wont be able to do it in less than 17 sec, in the reference i'm giving a lot of pauses that can be shortened.

I have a fallback idea if this is not very clear.

Cody - Polish

Hey Victor! I addressed the notes from Wednesday for the old man shot (pose changes on the fingers, keeping the cheekbones rigid, re-timing the tears, and cushioning the arm into the chair).

I'll be working on the lipsync from the other shot you critiqued, but is there anything else you see that could be touched up?

Also, awesome lecture last night! Thanks for putting it on.

Nicki - New shot pitch

Hi guys,

So after yesterday's pitch of my new shot and the feedback I got, I decided to go a different route. I think this new shot that I'm thinking of has more "character" in it and I can play around more with the acting. My reel already has a lot of "regular joe" types in it so I think this shot would be better to do. AND I am more inspired by it.

Anyways, here's my new pitch:

Audio:
http://syncsketch.com/playground/ccde737513804cb988ee3cc1c6cec712#55985

“Oh my goodness me! Someone owes a nickel to the swear jar. Oh, do you know what I say when I feel like swearing? Fudge.”

Meredith is a crazy old lady that lives next door. Tyler, 14, loses his ball over her fence and is caught retrieving it in her backyard. Meredith coerces Tyler to come inside for some soup and while they talk, he accidentally swears in front of her.

Meredith lives alone and her kids have have their own families now, so she overcompensates her bright energy when she interacts with people.

Subtext:
  • whoa, you’re not old enough to cuss!
  • Cussing is a bad habit
  • There are better ways to express yourself
  • Try this totally innocent word
History:
  • This is the first human interaction that Meredith has had with someone in the younger generation since her kids don’t come around with her grandchildren
  • She has the need to take care of people and share her knowledge that comes with old age
  • Tyler thinks she’s crazy already but he’s too polite to leave
Stakes:
  • Meredith doesn’t want to scare Tyler away
  • she doesn’t want to be alone again
Staging:
  • Meredith is stirring her soup on the stove when she hears Tyler say a bad word
I'm planning on only animating Meredith. Tyler is offscreen. I've attached a picture of an old lady next-door type i'm aiming for.

If you guys have any suggestions or ideas you think would make this planning stronger, please let me know! Otherwise, i'm going to start shooting reference and getting this into maya =) Thanks!

Blocking Revision- Rami

Hey everyone! I hope everyone had a good week.

I have two versions of this shot, I cant really decide on which one to go with, so any opinions will help. I'm leaning towards the first one.

Also there was one note I got from a couple of people at CTN that said the spinning the drumsticks felt like he was more confident than agitated. I was wondering if you all thought the same thing. I changed the instrument to a guitar now and had him interact with it differently, but I was curious what your thoughts on that was too.

All other notes are welcome too! Thanks in advance!

Bruna - new idea

Hello guys,

I had a few ideas while I was at CTN, and i decided to try a silent acting shot/action.

a dad and a baby. there is someone chasing them (we don't see them). they have nowhere else to run, it is a dead end.   the dad has to choose between giving up or trying to save his baby by.

gonna start blocking out something for next class if that is ok...

cheers,
Bruna

Hey everyone,

I wasn't very happy with the way the hand rested too long in the clothes and decided to add some accentuation trying to amp up how she feels, i feel the transition now works better but wanted to get your thoughts before going much further,

Still have to go thru my lypsinc notes.

New Pantomime Idea...

Hi Everyone,

I wanted to propose a new pantomime idea.

http://www.syncsketch.com/playground/5c17b9d5c85d4f548409d81e565c9b2c

It's an idea of an older cowboy that is ready to mount his horse and ride home for the night. Suddenly he gets hit with a sleeping dart in the arm or the neck and as he checks around to see where it came from he falls asleep off his horse.

I like it because I would like to show something physical with acting and a character reacting under a condition such as a sleeping dart.

Let me know what you think and if you don't I will continue to work on another idea.

Thanks so much!,
Michael

Holidays.

Hi Everyone,

This is a dialog shot that I worked on with victor last semester that I would like to finish up.

http://www.syncsketch.com/playground/869ca3e09aea4ec5877d7f901eabac95

The scenario is a lonely man that visits this bar quite often. He's kicked back a drink and now hes describing the holidays to the bar tender.

The mouth is just up and down right now so my next task is to really dial into those mouth expressions and mouth shapes of the dialog.

Let me know your thoughts and feedback.

Cody - Pantomime Blocking+

Hey everyone!

I've been working more on my shot this week, trimming the beginning and end, fixing some staging problems, and trying to convey how he feels after the initial reaction of surprise. There are a couple things I'm not sure about.

Now that I look at the playblast, the timing seems a little slow to me. Maybe it's just because I haven't polished up the physical stuff, or because he's an old man. Maybe I've just been looking at it too long. What do you guys think about the timing?

I'm also not sure about some of the phrases. I'm trying to set it up like Victor said last week, where we see his initial surprise, see him recalling memories, and then see how he feels about those memories. Is it getting across, or should I push it a little further? Any pose, timing, or acting notes would be really helpful. Thanks guys!

Cody - New Pantomime Blocking

Hey Victor! I've started to put in some blocking for my new shot, as well as trying out some new staging. I'm hoping to include the confusion at first that you were talking about, where he doesn't really remember what record it is until it starts playing. Do you think this is a good way to show that?

Also, do you think there's too much business for a subtle shot?

As always, thank you for the advice! Looking forward to your feedback.

Selen-Dialog

Hey everyone,

Happy Halloween! Here is a link for my ip version of the dialog animation.

I'd appreciate if you guys could check and let me know if there is any part where it is unappealing or out of character or pushed too much, or maybe a part that needs to be pushed more.

I need to work lot more on it, especially on the last 100 frames. It would be great if I could get some feedback to know if I am going on the right direction. Any feedback/sketches will be appreciated, feel free to state the obvious mistakes too, I might have missed it or haven't worked on it yet but either way it will help.

Cheers

Rami - notes from class

Hey everyone, here's a update on my shot after the notes from class.

I was curious if her head rotate screen right, when she says "nothings wrong", feels like too much is going on at that moment; or if it feels fine. It's just what I kept acting out when my head settled from the weight shift as well as trying to accent the dialogue just a bit.

Thanks in advance, see you all Wednesday!

Cody - Stick Up Polish and New Scene Ideas

Hey everyone!

I addressed all the polish notes from Wednesday night and put the cowboy shot on SyncSketch. Hopefully it's done, but let me know if there's anything left that I missed:

http://syncsketch.com/playground/20b20030a66a451d89cdcfbf02b5fcea#49861

Also, I'm coming up with ideas for a new pantomime shot. I was told recently that my reel could use a small, subtle shot in which the character switches between internal and external acting. I've thought of a few that I like, but I'm not sure which idea will read the best, or how much context I'll need to include.

My favorite idea is a guy riding a subway/Bart, and he hears a song on his ipod that reminds him of his late wife, which triggers old memories. I think having him holding the bar above him for balance will have nice asymmetry and lead to more unique one-hand acting choices. The thing I'm not certain about with this idea is that there's not much context, so it might be hard to understand why he's getting emotional. Do you guys think this is an issue?

In case there's not enough context, I have a couple backup ideas that are a little more obvious, but could still be entertaining:

- An old man flipping through a photo album and reacting to different photos
- A man reacting to his girlfriend storming off at a restaurant after a fight

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thanks guys!

Pantomime Blocking & Dart Facial_Francis

Hello guys,

I hope everybody are doing well.  I uploaded two clips to Syncsketch one of them is the Pantomime blocking and the other is the facial dart acting.

For the pantomime, I just animated the root (The rest head, chest are not animated) and a bit of her right leg at the end. Also, I did some simple facial act, but not the detail yet. What do you guys think about her disgust expression (around frame 141)? My friend said she looks angry rather than disgust.

FIXED MOVIES: Pantomime inspiration

Hi Class,
Here are some clips that I thought were good examples of pantomime acting.  Not only is the acting and staging very clear, but you get a good feel for the personality of the character and the stakes of the situation.

Here's a WIP by Tony Chau (I don't think he ever finished it) but I love how clear the intent of the character and the stakes of the situation are.  Password: 4animc

Here's a more serious piece of acting by Lesley Manville.   Notice the clear changes in her attitude and expression, and how she interacts with the phone.

And finally, here's a clip of Reese Witherspoon in Election.  She plays a very uptight character and notice how she reacts when things don't go her way.  Password: 4animc

See you all Wednesday!

Bruna - dialogue idea

I chose the "I'm living my life" line to animate! =)

And this is my idea for it:

She is a middle age woman/mom that put everything aside because life happened (family and kids) But now that her kids went to college, first time since a long time, she is doing something for herself, like going back to do the things she liked to do before.

So the scene is her, preparing to go on a road trip, talking to her husband that doesn't approve that decision. But she is determined that she is going.

I cut the dialogue and it is now with 7,5 sec..
can I go for it?

thanks,
Bruna

I found some cool dialogues that I would like to animate.  I particularly like the "Moses" one, I have a couple of  ideas for it, but I'm open to suggestions to see what you guys think too.   I can edit them if necessary.

1 - Fear
2-  Moses
3 - joke

Ideas - Dialog Option exploration

Hey gang!

So I tried trimming up the grandma dialog and i think I ended up cutting a lot of the stuff that I liked... is roughly 10 sec, I putted together three more options that I really like and that are about the same length, I want something that scales up and has energy.

http://www.syncsketch.com/playground/8771b4cb2f7349b1a6a1faed98f3a8fc

for 2 and 4 I have basically the same idea, the italic would be my take on the subtext

Idea
Guitar player wannabe and his dad broke his instrument, or a e-pro gamer and his dad broke his computer rig

make your mark (two phrases)

(what? - surprised)
Oh great …

(i can’t believe it - confused)
Oh that is just great now

(you don’t approve? - confused angry)
what did you always tell me …

(really? - )
 AHHH?

(dream big - angrier)
Make your mark…

(follow dream - angrier)
 Make your mark…

(be different - angrier)
Don’t be one of the numbers

(don’t settle - angrier)
Make your mark!

I am better than that (two phrases)

(what? - surprised)
oh come on!…

(you - surprised)
If I call you up to tell ya

(would like for me to get any job?- surprised confused )
“hey dad i’m the newest assistant sub-vice president of pencil sharping
at some crappy little company”

(and you would be happy? - angry)
you’re telling me you’d think that was greeeeeaat??

(well i won’t! - serious)

I am better than that!

What do you guys think? I'm gonna be exploring the ideas for the rest of them (getting the idea, setting and situation is the most difficult thing...)

Two versions - Couples shot

Hey everyone!

I was wondering what you all thought about having her head turn in the shot or not when she says "nothings wrong". I know it was a note we were still deciding on in class, so here are two versions, one with the head turn and one without.

The first version was one suggestion from class where she turns away from him after "nothings wrong" rather than having her continue looking at him like my old version had, so maybe that fixed the note. The second version was the other suggestion where the head turn's completely out, which to me, made me feel like a little bit of her acting needed to change; which I only roughly did so far.

Let me know if you wanted to see my video reference or the old version again, and I can upload those too.

Pantomime Ideas - Cody

Hey guys! I decided for my new assignment to do a pantomime where a character tries to perform a task while affected by internal/external circumstances. I thought of a few ideas I might like to animate today, and I was wondering if any of them stand out to you guys or if there are any I should avoid:

- A mailman tries to deliver a letter into a mailbox in super heavy wind

- A man walks into a very small bathroom in the middle of a party and wrecks everything

- A man tries to carry his groceries from his car to his house, but the sidewalk is slippery with ice

- A badass cowboy tries to enter a saloon and intimidate the other men, but his hat is too big to fit through the door

- A vampire tries to open his front door, but he realizes he forgot his keys, turns into a bat, and flies through the dog door (I like this one, but it might be a little too Hotel Transylvania-ey?)

Thanks!

Cody's Gear Change Blocking

Hey everyone!

http://syncsketch.com/playground/6a295cbf45a949899aefa8037e20db42#45633

I blocked out my idea for this week's gear change assignment, and I'm debating with what to do for the ending. Right now, I have a sort of slapstick punch at the end, but I'm not a big fan of putting a button on the end of a shot for no reason. I'm considering taking it out and just ending with the subtle change in the guy's face. That way, it won't be as rushed, and will have a bit more of a serious tone. What do you guys think? Is it worth keeping in?

Thanks!

Michael DeBrosse - Potential Pantomime

Hi Everyone,

I wanted to share 2 clips that I had previously worked on that I think would be a good base for a pantomime.

https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B_eAPSdBTK4wMHBKeUVCUzVLLTA/view?usp=sharing

In the first clip I really want to build this out as a man in a candy shop. He decides to steal and sneak a sour ball into his mouth from a container on a shelf. He dose not realize how sour it is until its too late and he needs to turn away to hide his expression from the employee standing close to him.

The 2nd Clip has dialog attached to it but due to its harsh language I would like a chance to turn this into a pantomime. My vision is that the main character is a father who has just walked into the bathroom in the morning after his son or daughter has finished using it. It has a distinct odor that he smells after entering the room and quickly turns to give his child a scolding look of discontentment. I would like to change this to add more character as it seems to be lacking uniqueness in the character actions.

A new piece if I shouldn't use these bases is the idea of a homeless man waiting in a line for some soup. He has not eaten in a while so this soup is very important to him considering this is the only thing he might eat all day. As its poured into his cup, he quickly smells it as if this is the best food he has ever smelled and then decides

1. to delicately place it down on his tray

2. or continues to smell it and quickly realizes how bad it actually is and quickly turns to a look of disgust.

Let me know what you think of these options.

Thanks,
Michael

Hey everyone! I had a great first class, and I've been having a lot of fun working on the first assignment. I have a pretty polished pass ready, and any notes or suggestions you guys have would be great.

Unfortunately, I had an emergency happen and won't be able to make it to the second week of class. I'll still be working on assignments, and I'll see you all on week 3. Thank you!

Welcome to Fall 2015 session!

Hi Class, I'm looking forward to meeting you all tonight. Don't forget to have your demo reels ready if you're new to my class!

This is a private blog I created where you can share your work with me and your classmates in between classes.  I encourage you to leave feedback for each other.  I will add comments as my schedule allows.

Here is a compilation of my very first animation exercises at Pixar, back when I started in 2000.  Yikes!
